Before ya throw out the split rig idea, try a ketch or yawl. I'd never sailed a multi masted boat prior to my current one and now I wouldn't go back, for cruising.

I was faced with this same issue on a 46 yr old boat recently. I was able to get Liability without a survey from Progressive with limits of 100/300/100 for under $400 per annum.
