In the spring we are sailing from Ft. Meyers Fl. to Xcalak Mexico and I cannot locate any decent electronic charts for Tulum Mexico or Xcalak Mexico. I have e-mailed XTC Dive Center in Xcalak and they said when arriving to hail them on 16 and they would escort us thru the reef. This is very generous and an indication of the good times ahead. I still would like the CD-ROM format for the lap top computer as the Garmin charts are adequate. Thanks for any ideas.

The only chart for the area is #28190 - 1:300,000 Ambergris Cay to Isla Cozumel. It is available in the old/ancient electronic charts put out by the original Maptech. But in any case it show little or nothing except a smooth coastline and a little cirlce labeled "Tulun." In this area of the world you need to invest in the various Cruising Guidebooks. They will have sketch charts or descriptions. "Mexico Boating Guide" by Capt Pat & John Rains has one small set of paragraphs on Tulum which paraphrased, say there is not much of anything there but a fringing reef and no good place to anchor. Puerto Aventuras is just north and is the closest place with a marina.

The same chart for Xcalak (Xcalac) - not mention in the guide books other that there is a Mexican Navy post there and it is the southernmost place on Mexico's Atlantic/Caribbean coastline.

I found out that there are a couple of permanent mooring balls at Xcalak which will be nice but after much checking we may pass on Tulum. Seems the only way thru the reef is in a fairly narrow unmarked channel. The ruins are cool but not that cool.
