Hi,

I am looking for a sailing school to spend my winter vacation with. Honestly, my spec is quite broad yet tricky to find using plaing old google.

I am looking for reputation or experience based suggestions on any RYA schools that

- operate in parts of the world that are warm during December-January. This is my well-waited for winter vacation, and I have a few weeks for sailing which is the beef - if it's in a location reasonably accessible (from Europe), it's doable.

- offer tuition/examination for Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore practical certificates

Caribbean, SE Asia, and South Africa spring to my mind. But a lot of the shops seem to be small-ish and many have limited offering beyond Day Skipper.

Plain miles building with strangers is not an interest of mine. I'm looking for a opportunity to hone my skills, of course while having a good time and hopefully getting ahead with my certificates. Any suggestions?

Grateful for any ideas,

- Nec

The Cape in Summer

Natal in Winter

Langebaan provides the best option if the weather is poor during your vacation dates.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "reasonably accessible" doesn't it.

Last January, my wife and I were certified USS for bareboat, by Offshore Sailing School out of The Moorings charter base in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. They also run RYA certification now at that location, apparently up to Coastal Skipper (according to their web site). http://www.offshoresailing.com/locations/b...in-islands.aspx You might inquire as to further levels. Our instructor was a certified instructor for both RYA and USS. The Moorings, the school, and the instructor were all great.

The BVI are fantastic! Met every expectation that we ever heard/read about. Awesome conditions for sailing and snorkeling/diving. (We missed the "Christmas winds".) Very laid back, if you chose to be, or high-end if that is your liking. That was our first trip to the BVI and hopefully we will return again and again. Our only regret was not having more time after the instruction was over, to sail on our own for another week.
