I am courious how would you get from Panama to Japan. From the little knowledge I have, I would either run in the trade belt through Hawaii (two months in open ocean, scary) and Northern Mariana/Guam to Philippines, and then through Taiwan, or take the Milk Run to PNG, and then turn north.

What would you do, and what should be known about timing, weather and places?

If you left today - it would be fairly easy - but its a long way with one stop.

1st Leg - Panama >> Hawaii :- 4,600 nautical miles

2nd. Leg - Hawaii >> Japan :- 3,700 nautical miles

Total distance +/- 8,300nm @ 100nm/day = 83 days + 7 days stop in Hawaii = 3 month passage.

Ideally one would have started this passage a month earlier to arrive in Japan no later than the end of April, (Typhoon season runs May >> Dec).

Hi!
I used the Google Map's distance measuring tool that shows about 5,100 miles (Panama to Waimea, HI) and about 4,590 miles (Waimea to Nagasaki, JP). So Google does not give you nautical miles and that's why the values are different from the ones by MMNETSEA?
Just curious Jason

Nautical miles vs statute miles?

A nautical mile is based on the circumference of the earth, and is equal to one minute of latitude. It is slightly more than a statute (land measured) mile (1 nautical mile = 1.1508 statute miles ). Nautical miles are used for charting and navigating.
