"We are having some problems finding out the last known position of the Hapag-Lloyd Paris Express when she lost some 21 TEU's or containers on 5 May 2007. It is believed that the Express may have been in the general area of both sail boats. Lloyds of London does not report the location of cargo losses, just ships.

If anyone runs across any information as to the reported location of the Paris Express at the time please let me know.

That was my first try.. I contacted one of their VPs....And they still have not replied nor returned calls.....

Unfortunately not able to comment on Hapag-Lloyd's lack of response to your organization's attempts to contact them.

As Cruiser Log does not have communications with Hapag-Lloyd we are not in a position to assist.

What lessons did I learn, for example?

Even with the best of weather reporting, you can be caught in a disaster. Friends were in the "Queen's Birthday Storm" in the South Pacific in 1993, I think, and they thought they were going to die. Three people did die in that unexpected storm. That made me read up on the 1979 Fastnet Race, and the storm that nobody expected there. Lots of lessons learned from those storms that may or may not be applicable here.

Staying with your boat until you absolutely have to leave is probably the number one lesson from the various storm reports.

Make sure your EPIRB is registered correctly.

Keep a cool head.

Watch out for chafe.

have good storm gear.
