Default Asymmetric Spinnaker for Cruising

We've got a 32 foot cutter rigged boat with a bowsprit. We always struggle (without a pole) to sail deep enough when sailing downwind.

We're planning to add a kite to our inventory and our sailmaker has suggested an asymmetric. I would really like to hear from people with experience of using them.

How well do they work? Can you sail deep enough with them (say down to 160 or more AWA)? Are they "relatively" easy to handle with limited crew? Any other comments? What wind speeds will they cope with?

Thanks

Mike

Yor sailmakers is telling you the truth and if I where you I would get tha asymetric cause it's perfect downwind or in light winds, singlehanded and much easier than a Spi and you can even use a furler.

Good luck with it

I had an asymetric with sock as well as a regular spinnaker on a Sigma 33.

I handled the asymmetric alone with a bit of imaginative line handling and running almost at 180 was tremendous. Didn't actually measure the biggest angle I could get. My next boat will have one.

Thanks for the input guys,

we've taken the plunge and it should be ready next week. We've gone for bigger shoulders to maximise the downwind angles rather than the higher angles. Comes out at 850 sq ft.

I'll let you know how it flies.

Regards

Mike
