Default Cruising Guide - Aden (Red Sea Route)

Not sure how many people on this board are debating whether to use the Red Sea Route or the South Africa route to cruise around the world, but I thought I would throw in my two cents.

I just sailed in the Gulf of Aden, and found it a pretty benign place to sail. I did stick mostly to the Yemen coastal side and all in all had a pretty good sail. The fishermen we met very friendly and helpful, and at no time did we feel threatened.

I've also written a cruising guide to the Port of Aden and posted it on my website. You can find it at: http://www.geocities.com/arkayos/aden.html

I also plan to post this message on the Indian ocean board. Any comments, or suggestions would be welcome.

Dave,

Great write-up! Which direction were you headed in the Red Sea?

Just out of interest......

As of tomorrow I wil be starting two months of aerial surveillance in the Gulf of Aden and southern Red Sea. The Aircraft, a Britten Norman Islander call sign LX-KEV, is equipped with marine VHF. I wil be flying every patrol myself and will keep an eye out for yachts in the area.

Don't spread the news outside the sailing fraternity as we want to catch some "bad guys".

Aye,

Stephen

Thanks for the comment Ken, We actually set out from Aden, sailed east for three days, then returned to Aden due to escalating mechanical failures. There really is nowhere else to go in about a 300 mile radius.

Stephen you will have to let us know how successful you were, and whether it was on the Yemen or Somalia side of the gulf. I'd be interested to know how you can tell the difference between the bad guys and fishermen... Best of luck either way.
