Piracy Increase Off Somalia Coast

IHT has published a report on piracy increase off the Somalia coast.

While there is nothing really new, there is not a word about cruiser. It appears that the various agencies keeping statistics on piracy or "armed robbery at sea" as it is sometimes called, are primarily concerned with commercial shipping. I suppose being concerned with vaulable cargo is fair enough, is there anyone looking at piracy on Yachts?

Hello Francis,

The report quoted the IMB's Piracy reporting centre based in Kuala Lumpur.

They do carry any news of attacks on cruising yachts - I guess very few yachts if any ever go near Somalia's East coast where most of the baddies operate against shipping.

These "pirates" are in the main insurgents operating under the various war lords. No doubt they are a danger to shipping.

Yachts using via the Gulf of Aden stay away from the northern Somali coast , whilst doing the same as far as the Yemen coast is concerned. Waypoints and a passage plan is available via private email through Cruiser Log.
