Hello,

I am looking at beginning the keelboat certification process. Other than renting Hobie Cats on vacation for a day or two, I am a rank newbie in terms of learning the real side of sailing.

I see both US Sailing and American Sailing Association offer certifications.

Can anyone offer the pros and cons of each organization to help me decide which would be the better choice for me?

There is one of each about an hour away from me so the real factor is more what benefits (now and the future) you could get out of each organization.

Best regards...

Bruce

I took ASA classes - where I live both are offered.

A quick look at the course content shows them to be very similar (USS fans might disagree), but USS classes were about twice as much as ASA locally when I enquired.

As I understand it, ASA is based on a Canadian course (CYA or something?), which in turn is based on British (RYA?) classes.

Cheers.
