Over 20 years ago I gave up cruising in my Waterwitch ketch which I sailed in the UK from Scarborough to Portsmouth and then channel hopping and solent day sailing, pressure of work dictated. I am now keen to re-enter the fraternity and do a bit of blue water, going from the UK to Greek islands and after a year or two across the Indian Ocean to Kerala. I am looking for a boat with a pilothouse, preferably enclosed like most Scandanavian boats, preferably a ketch but could live with a cutter or sloop if it ticked most of the other boxes. To I have in mind at the moment are the RoamerIII with afty cabin, the Hartley Tahitian and the Nicholson 38. I am looking for something between 36 and 45 feet that two of us could live on for a couple of years. I will be spending at least a year bringing myself up to speed with modern nav and comms gear, deciding on the boat and getting a new CofC.

Any advice and/or suggestions would be welcome.

TIA

Brian Owen

Brian,

Our last boat was a custom Worldcruiser 37 Pilothouse Sloop built by Bud Taplin - of Westsail fame. From a distance, she looked like an Islander PH 37.

I do miss the comfort, protection and view offered by the pilothouse (especially when things turn ugly) and think if I ever want to go that route again - I'd try to find a good deal on a Fisher or an Island Trader. Both are well built production motorsailors.

Try www.yachtworld.com to see what's available and compare features.

Happy hunting,

Kirk

Hi,

A site worth looking at is building motorsailers in China by Americans :-
