Hello from Calgary AB Canada. It is -23C and snowing.
While new to this forum I am not new to sailing. I started sailing in 1981 in Houston on a Tartan 10 racing on Galveston Bay. I have spent the past quarter century cruising / chartering mainly in the Pacific Northwest. Other areas in which I have sailed are Turkey, the Bahamas, Caribbean, and the Sea of Cortez. Offshore sailing has included Honolulu to BC and Newport to St Barthes via Bermuda. I have recently returned to some racing: Swiftsure, Van Isle 360 and some crewing on local San Juan 21's.
Most of my sailing these days is work. I retired from teaching 5 years ago. I love teaching and I love sailing, so the retirement plan was to combine the two. In 1991 I become an instructor and spent the next decade improving my skills and certification levels. I spend about 3 months each year teaching sailing / cruising. Three times a year I conduct an Advanced / Yachtmaster Offshore course around Vancouver Island.
In the off season I teach coastal Navigation and a couple of other theory courses. When I am not sailing I also teach computer courses and digital photography.
I find that following discussions on forums such as this that I am able to expand my knowledge.
I am especially interested in linking up with other instructors to share ideas and resources. As a service to my students and others I maintain a web site of sites associated with learning sailing. (
