Hi there

Does anyone out there have an IC-735 in use on their boat and if so, what tuner do you use with it? Also, is it possible to connect a Pactor modem to an IC-735.

Thanks

Craig

Hi Craig,

The standard Icom Tuners for the IC 735 is the AH-2 and the AT-150 .

Other tuners in the wattage range of 100 - 150 watts -- eg the AH 4 and the AT 180 also will work.

You can also use the MFJ tuners - the tiny MFJ 902 or the MFJ 904.

THe best Pactor is the III - here is their site :- Pactor

Here is an AH-4 for auction in Ebay :_ TUNER

Hi Richard

Many thanks for your helpful response.

Can assume from your post that a Pactor modem CAN be connected to an IC-735?

Cheers

Craig

Craig,

Your Best Bet for Specific Info. on the coupling of an Icom 735 to a Pactor is to contact them at

E-mail: info@scs-ptc.com

They will know of any issues that pertain to that marriage.

While you are here check out our WIKI on the subject :- Email at Sea

Hi Craig,

Had some more thought about the IC 735 - in doing so went back to the Pactor site which was not helpful - if ever the statement "geek gooblegook" was more true. I also had a look at the rear panel of the 735 to see what connections were available. I now will go to my guru in Australia to get his advice as to whether the marriage is feasible in view of the 735's age.

Hi Richard

Thanks for your efforts. Actually, I had a reply from the Pactor people saying their modem can be use so that is fine.

I am, however, receiving conflicting reprts regarding the tuner issue. Icom New Zealand say I can use an AH-4 and Icom America say I cannot so I am at a bit of a loss in that respect.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Cheers

Craig

Hi Craig,

I have had reply from Marc Robinson (a really good guy) - the IC 735 can be connected to the Pactor III.

I will send you his reply via a PM - he has all the knowledge and components to set you up for Winlink and can advise how to do the mods for Sailmail if your IC 735 does not have the appropriate frequencies.

As far as the Tuner is concerned the standard Icom tuners for the 735 are the AH 2 and the AT 150 - these are no longer made - they were replaced by the AH 4 and the AH 180.

Here is a review of the radio :-Icom IC

Gday Craig,

I had a 735 on the boat for about 15 years... retired it recently and I am now using it ashore with an SGC SG-239 tuner. The 239 isn't really designed for shipboard use but its brother the SG 230 is. When afloat I was running the 735 through an Icom AT-130. Current set up afloat is a 710 with the AT-130 and a 706Mk2G hooked up with a new AT - 141.

The 710 was previously successfully paired with an SEA tuner and the Pactor. The Pactor is now running with the 706.........

I don't think it matters which tuner you use with your 735... however I would steer clear of both the AT 150 and the 180... neither is designed for shipboard use.

Cheers

Frank
