Default Caribbean to the UK

Hello,

I was due to crew a boat from St Lucia to the UK but the engine failed and will take a long time to get repaired. I am looking for a new boat as I'm now stranded in Saint Lucia.

I have sailed around and about the Caribbean twice, in the UK and Ireland (I'm Irish) I can be a deck hand (I know a jibe from a tack), I'm happy doing watches etc and am generally quite entertaining and helpful as well as not a bad cook and good with people.

Thank You

Kristine

Good luck in finding another boat to hitch a ride on. It's too bad that you cannot assist with the repair of the engine for the boat you're supposed to crew on. What happened to the engine on the boat you're on? Transmission? something else? Does the cruisers need help getting parts or information?

Again, good luck

Hi,

The boat, Oceanian 60, is stuck as the cam chain broke and the part will have to be sourced and imported from the UK which could take a very long time indeed. Though on the bright side it's ggod it broke down here and not in the Atlantic ...

What is an Oceanian 60? No google results...

Many larger boats don't use their engines while on passage since they usually use a genset for charging while underway if needed for onboard equipment. Getting into and out of harbor is often the important part of having the engine handy. So suppose the likely scene would have been a break when getting into port--which really could have been dicy.

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity with the detail.

That sounds like it would have been a bigger "ouch" than just the chain itself if the break happened while the engine was in use.

Good luck to the boat's owners in getting things sorted out to satisfaction quickly.

That's sweet! I'd try to wait for it if there were any possible way. If I were young and single and had a place to stay in the Caribbean and a ride across the Atlantic in a schooner...

Yes, it would seem that it's a great boat to crew on. Are you sure you can't help them out with something they need done and just wait it out? Of course, I say this knowing that often owners don't want to have extra crew hanging around in port but rather just want help with the crossing.

Ah. I just looked up the Southern Ocean 60. Nice. The one for sale on Yachtworld has a regular 80 hp Lehman (e.g. Ford tractor motor) diesel engine. In the USA, fairly easy to find parts for that--and quick to ship anywhere worldwide. What sort of engine does the one there have? Must be different.
