Ken Barnes - Solo non-stop circumnavigation
This is my neighbor “Ken Barnes” in Long Beach Shoreline Marina. His slip is right next to mine. I met him about 6 months ago when he moved in and he told me that he was going to make a solo circumnavigation “non-stop”.
I thought to myself “why?”…you could probably get a nice female to join you if you stopped at a few beaches along the way. Nonetheless, he is a smart motivate guy and he seems to be making good progress towards achieving his dream. At least he is out there doing it!

Same reaction...why? Personal satisfaction isn't very satisfying when the goal is _______. Fill in the blank yourself.
Wrong direction, wrong latitudes, wrong weather, wrong goal.

As someone who has spent 20 years stopping to "smell the roses", a non-stop circumnavigation strikes me as boring. But my interests and needs are as uniquely mine as Ken's are his. He makes clear that he is in a committed relationship
He's going the right way for a high latitude nonstop circumnavigation, but in the Journey section he completely skips over an ocean and a Cape. I assume that whoever wrote this for him left out that entire section.
What I liked best was in the section "About Ken", this sentence: "It took me years to be debt free, but I don’t believe in leaving someone else holding the bag for my dreams. That includes the boat and everything on it should things not go as planned."
Live long enough, travel far enough, and we all will have benefitted from the kindness of strangers. We shouldn't rely on it, though.
I wish him well.

Yep, pretty much agree with you: woopidoo....why dont "they" just get out there and get on with it without feeling that the whole of the rest of the world needs to know about it? Tony

When resident in Oz knew John Sanders who maybe 15 years back did this non-stop on an SS34, and came back to Freo for a year or so. Then off he went again to do a double circumnavigation in something a bit bigger.
I'm not sure the solitude of such trips is good for individuals but hey - most are big boys and can make own choices - so my good wishes go with Ken for a successful trip.

As with most cruising sailors, I would have not been introduced to the lifestyle if it had not been for other people who took the time to document their plans and experiences. Blogs merely circumvent the need for us to pay for magazines which contain abridged, censored and otherwise edited versions of the same basic content. Keep it up Ken.

Auzzee - you are absolutely right. I must have 6 -8 magazines that arrive each month, of which I only pay for one "Blue Water Sailing". The others just started showing-up soon after. Nonetheless, I find that I learn far more about the day-to-day of cruizing from Blogs and interacting via email with the sailors that are on the water where I want to be so badly while sitting in my office on a Saturday morning.
Whatever Ken's motivation, I'm certain we will learn something. I only hope he gets his unit coversions corrected before it is too late
Also, there is mention of the S&S34 Double Solo by Jon Sanders in this months Sail (pg 8).
