Default Missing SF Sailor

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Coast Guard is searching for a San Francisco man who never completed a roundtrip sailing trip from San Francisco to the Farallon Islands.

A Coast Guard spokesperson says 63-year old Jim Gray left alone on his 40-foot sailboat "Tenacious" sometime yesterday morning and was expected back yesterday evening.

His wife called the Coast Guard around 8:30 last night when he did not return or answer her calls.

The Coast Guard continues to search today.

We're praying for him and his family.

The mystery continues...

The mystery of what happened to Microsoft engineer Jim Gray deepened Tuesday, with leads of a possible sighting of his boat turning up nothing despite a massive search from Monterey Bay to Oregon.

His family is perplexed about the fate of the avid boater and sometime maverick, his daughter Heather told the Mercury News on Tuesday, two days after he left on a day sailing trip to scatter his mother's ashes at the Farallon Islands. Gray carefully planned offshore trips in his 40-foot C&C yacht, she said, but he would leave important sailing safety equipment at home.

A couple of snide remarks about leaving his equipment at home jumps to mind but is inappropriate here. Perplexing, as it seems he is an otherwise bright individual.

In Hawai'i last year 2 boats showed up (small fishing boats) at the harbors, without the operator on board. Both had fallen overboard and were never recovered. Two other boats were recovered close to shore, also without operators on board. I wonder if he possibly fell overboard...my biggest fear when single handing.

At this point, I'm thinking fall overboard or heart attack. At his age, both have about the same probability.

Does anyone know what the fuel capacity is on a C&C 40?

With help from others...

Coast Guard search extended:

About Jim:

http://research.microsoft.com/~Gray/

I'd imagine that when your friends are founders of Billion $ companies like Google and Microsoft, the search will get extended for quite some time.
