Hello all

My name is Mel and me and two of my mates want to travel by boat from Canarys to the carribean next year as part of our first leg of a travelling expedition around south america and the carribean. We would love to go by boat and have heard about the Atlantic Rally on 24th Nov. Can any of you tell us if we need to do any courses or what we need to do in order to be ready. WE want to do it in 2009 so we have a year and a bit to prepare. We are also all VERY good cooks if that helps .

Anyway I hope someone can help us..

Hi Mel,

IMHO completing a RYA Competent Crew course would stand you and your mates in good stead. I believe that, plus the offer to help both provision and then cook, would find you a spot as crew.

Please also be aware that few skippers need crew once in St Lucia. So the local immigration people will want to see you've enough money / resources / tickets to move oward from their country in due course.

Suggest if not sorted by November you aim to get to Gran Canaria early in the month. Lots of yachts arrive equally early and its the early birds etc.

Good luck

JOHN
