Default Be aware Sunshine Coast Qld Australia

If your cruising the Queensland Coast be aware that the Marine and Fisheries are not permitting live aboard between Noosa and the Southern end of Bribie Island except at a marina(2), Mooloolaba Yacht Club or the pile births(there is a list of yachts waiting for one) entering the Mooloola River. The Mooloola River at Mooloolaba is the only practical place on the Sunshine Coast anyway. They are reacting to an Environmetal act. There is no problem staying over at anchor for a while but not for sleeping on board. Of coarse they visit during the day so one could say your staying ashore with friends and doing a bit of maintainence during the days while your visiting the Sunshine Coast - but I'm not telling you to do that, but it is tempting!!! Telling the truth is a costly fine.

Regards to all, happy sailing

Peter

What about foreign vessels? What is happening to Australia? What about freedom? What if you can't afford a hotel for the duration of your stay? How do they know if you're sleeping on board if you just ignore them when they come by?

I think the local bureaucrats are taking lessons from those that legislate over the ICW. The impact of cruisers on the Great Barrier Reef and areas off the north coast of Brisbane is minimal. However those minorities who seem these days to have the majority influence, have successfully convinced the authorities that live aboard cruisers are a grubby bunch who exist only to poop in the water. It is a sad fact that so many governments in Australia who are enacting these gems of legislation, are responsible for governing sewerage discharge from land dwellers, via ocean outfalls, directly into the sea.

You're absolutely right! They do the same thing in California in most harbours, but they're pretty lenient if you're just anchoring in a cove someplace... It's funny how human feces are so much more offensive than say shark or whale cr*p!

BTW, I used to live in Melbourne, it's where I learned to sail, so I'll always have a special place in my heart for Australia.. It's changed so much since I left in 1984... When I lived there, the biggest threat was the Chinese invading, or the Queen interfering in politics.. -still miss it though.

Auzee,

I just saw a documentary on the Discovery Channel about how these big star fish are eating the Great Barrier Reef..

Hi Robin,

I think it must have been an older documentary. The crown of thorns star fish was big news in the 80's. Then it was discovered to be a regular event which had little long term impact on the reef. Rest assured the reef is in wonderful condition and that's despite the occasional piece of poop which makes it into the water via the cruising community.

Besy wishes

David
