Peter's great-grandfather was a naval engineer, supposedly hired by Herreshoff to design an external ballast system for their yachts. *This was in 1893 or thereabouts, but Herreshoff now seems to deny that he worked for them. *No matter, this to be addressed elsewhere by others.

Since we are commencing our Great Loop cruise (circumnavigating the Eastern U.S. via the Hudson River, Erie Canal, Great Lakes, and then rivers down to the Gulf of Mexico), I have volunteered to do some of the inland research. *G-grandfather worked at the Racine Boat (Manufacturing) Co. in Racine, Wisconsin from 1896 to 190(1?), perhaps later. *He designed the Vencedor, a yacht/schooner that took part in the 1897 or 1898 Toledo Cup race on Lake Erie. *

I am looking for contacts I could approach regarding searching their yacht club or other archives for more information.

The yacht clubs or organizations below have, I am hoping, archives or information dating from 1895 or so. *If anyone belongs to one of these groups, I would appreciate an introduction to search their historical documents if at all possible.

International Yacht Race Association,*Toledo, Ohio

Toledo Yacht Club, Toledo, Ohio

Chicago Yacht Club, or Lincoln Park Yacht Club, Lincoln Park, Chicago, Illinois*

Peter's great-grandfather's name was Torwald S. Poekel, born in Nevsted, Denmark in 1863, came to the US in 1886, apparently to work for Herreshoff in Bristol, RI.

Any suggestions or introductions would be greatly appreciated.
