I'd like to say THE MIGHTY WALLABIES but in all fairness I see a France vs NZ final, with NZ getting up in the final minutes 23-21 thanks to a Dan Carter penalty.

..............and I would like to say the BOKS but I think Del is right about it being a France - NZ final. Of these two teams, I don't care what the score is or who wins.....as long as it is NZ.

Difficult if not impossible to predict any of this on form cos it's a cup competition without the benefit of that second or third test to pull off a rescue. All or nothing, of course, means surprises and manner or margin of victory means little unless it's marred by injuries or supensions.

That said, you can't really see that many top-end surprises other than Argentina catching France on a nervy opening evening when every Frenchman expects miracles or England beating South Africa a week today. If either happen, of course, it'll just make the rest of the competion that much more interesting!

As far as the unlikely winners are concerned, it's simply wide open and I can only hope that we'll see some new nation making its mark on what ITV who have the broadcasting rights in the UK are quite rightly calling the best team game in the world!

Good luck to you all - can't wait to see how it all unfolds!

Pete

Argentina's Ignacio Corleto scored the first try of the World Cup

France (9) 12

Pens: Skrela (4)

Argentina (17) 17

Tries: Corleto

Pens: F Contepomi (4)

Argentina rocked tournament hosts France with a sensational 17-12 victory in the opening match of the 2007 Rugby World Cup in Paris.

The inspired Pumas outplayed an error-ridden and nervous-looking France and took control with a first-half try from full-back Ignacio Corleto.

Centre Felipe Contepomi chipped in with 12 points to leave the 80,000-strong Stade de France crowd stunned.

France could only muster four penalties from struggling fly-half David Skrela.

The French became only the second home side in the six-event history of the World Cup to lose their opening game. England lost to New Zealand in 1991.

My wife had trouble diferentiating between rugby union and league in the early days. she eventually decided a big part of union comprised of 1 bloke trying to push two blokes up three blokes backsides. Carn the Wallabies (but if I was investing money it would be on the all blacks defeating the Boks)

Ireland to fail the impossible task and Argentina to top the group, France to beat New Zealand in the quarter final.

England get organised and beat Tonga in a war of attrition before going on to meet Australia in the quarters - what a prospect that is!

Scotland beat Italy well and Wales sort out the Fijians.

Best news so far is the perforances of some of the minnows - Portugal, Japan and Georgia in particular - but it's also nice to see Romania re-appearing on the fringes - heaven help us all when they and Georgia get some real funding. Biggest disappointment so far is Ireland who have simply gone to the dogs. Other good news is a reduction in WC proper numbers and the introduction of a separate mini-WC for minnows.

Other than that, very best news this weekend will be newly promoted Caldy beating Harrogate in National 3 North this weekend and the Burmese generals seeing sense and giving Burma back to its people.

See ya!

What a wonderful game

go basically to form

Pity for New Zealand and France but they actually get each other at the Millenium Stadium, Cardiff quarter final next weekend so an early Final for some forecasters!

However well Argentina are doing, Scotland will fancy it's chances against a team that really looks like it's enjoying itself, has not yet to show any serious weakness or being exposed to any real resistance/insight. South Africa should batter Fiji into total submission and England will struggleto stem the Aussie tide but there've already been a couple of real surprises so.....

... next weekend's looking good; see ya!

PS: Caldy beat Harrogate 18-0 on Saturday; next weekend, Preston Grasshoppers - different level but no less entertaining. Still no sign of any real progress in Burma!
