Hi there,
I am thinking about the best options to sail my
38ft cutter from KK to Hong Kong. I have sailed her up from Singapore earlier this year. Here is what I have come up with until now, appreciate comments!
Best timing for the trip seems to be end of May / June, when the SW monsoon has settled in. I uploaded the relevant section of the pilot charts for
June here. Other months are
here. I am not quite sure about the typhoon activity in May/June (
here is the average typhoon activity in Feb from the Pilot Charts, I'll upload May/June later) - it's never going to be perfectly safe, but it seems that it's quite unlikely to encounter heavy weather in the southern half of the journey (also from the pilot charts). However, further up north May/June is not the safest month - typhoonwise. Even though I have heard that the real typhoon season starts in August?
Since its somewhere north of 1000nm from KK to HK plus the chance of a typhoon, I wouldn't want to do it as one leg. But then, I haven't found a lot of info about sailing up the Philippine Coast, especially when it comes to leaving the boat there for a while with someone looking after her.
Bolineo was recommended to me but its already 670nm from KK.... Are there any safe anchorages / marinas / ports on my way? Manila doesn't sounds like a great option from what I've read and it's only 100nm less than Balineo. So
Palawan or West Mindoro are really the only stopovers that I can see looking at the charts - any tipps?
Safe Sailing
