Hi there,

I am thinking about the best options to sail my 38ft cutter from KK to Hong Kong. I have sailed her up from Singapore earlier this year. Here is what I have come up with until now, appreciate comments!

Best timing for the trip seems to be end of May / June, when the SW monsoon has settled in. I uploaded the relevant section of the pilot charts for June here. Other months are here. I am not quite sure about the typhoon activity in May/June (here is the average typhoon activity in Feb from the Pilot Charts, I'll upload May/June later) - it's never going to be perfectly safe, but it seems that it's quite unlikely to encounter heavy weather in the southern half of the journey (also from the pilot charts). However, further up north May/June is not the safest month - typhoonwise. Even though I have heard that the real typhoon season starts in August?

Since its somewhere north of 1000nm from KK to HK plus the chance of a typhoon, I wouldn't want to do it as one leg. But then, I haven't found a lot of info about sailing up the Philippine Coast, especially when it comes to leaving the boat there for a while with someone looking after her. Bolineo was recommended to me but its already 670nm from KK.... Are there any safe anchorages / marinas / ports on my way? Manila doesn't sounds like a great option from what I've read and it's only 100nm less than Balineo. So Palawan or West Mindoro are really the only stopovers that I can see looking at the charts - any tipps?

Safe Sailing

Hello Jo,

At this time - with the current winds - no problems getting to Hong Kong from Kota Kinabalu

Here is a snap shot of the winds in question :-

1st Stop - Puerto Princessa - Palawan

or Bonbanon - Southern Negros

2nd Stop - Puerto Galera - Northern Mindoro

3rd Stop Bolinao -- friend has a mooring there - should be able to put in touch

Bolinao only 3 days with present winds to Hebe Haven - Hong Kong

Thanks!

I did some more research and created a map with the relevant moorings, marinas and Yacht Clubs and the distances from KK:

KK - Maricaban Cruising Club 465nm

KK - Punta Fuego 563nm

KK - Batangas Maya 563nm

KK - Subic Bay 588nm

KK - Manila 598nm

KK - Kudat 125nm

KK - Puerto Princesa 335nm

KK - El Nido 430nm

KK - Coron Harbor 553nm

KK - Puerto Galera 647nm

KK - Bolinao 765nm

KK - San Fernando 802nm

Am I missing something? The suggested first stop @ Puerto Princesa sounds like a good option. I couldn't find much about the facilities there though? For the second suggested stop (Puerto Galera) - what about El Nido, Coron or Maricaban? Anyone knows anything about facilities there? Good place to leave the boat? Easy to find someone to look after her while I am gone?

MMNETSEA: Where do you get the neat wind map? Is that pilot charts? What months?

Thanks!
