Hi everyone,

I'm a producer and cast member on an American travel show called Jet Set Zero. We're exploring the possibility of crewing a yacht this summer season as a part of our show and I was hoping to get a little advice on it. First, about the show: Jet Set Zero follows four young Americans who began 9 months ago with no money, working minimum wage jobs to see just how far they could get. Since then, we've ridden ostriches in Vietnam, seen the temples of Bangkok, braved starvation and homelessness in Tokyo, and survived riots in Seoul.

We have been living and working in Asia for 9 months now, and we're looking to transition to South America. Since a couple of us (myself included) have had sailing experience, and our show is about *adventure* travel, it would be natural to find berth on a ship heading out across the Pacific-- and I figure it could break the monotony of the voyage for fellow crewmen to know they'd be on TV.

Here are my questions:

1. We have a small crew, but the cast could be up to 7. Despite being TV personalities, we're damn hard workers-- but will it be possible to find room for 9 people if two aren't working (camera crew)?

2. How long is the voyage from, say, Fiji, to anywhere in South America?

3. Where should we look and who should we talk to?

Suva, Fiji to Lima, Peru is 6,000 nautical miles, "as the crow flies." Add about 30% for sailing against wind and current, and it's a minimum of 7,800 nautical miles. It's not an easy sail going from West to East; I'd estimate with non-professional crew that a 45' multihull might do about 6 to 8 knots, (nautical miles per hour), which is about 40 to 54 days of sailing, non-stop.
