Hi,my name is Sean Dugmore,I live in Langebaan on the west coast of Cape Town, South Africa. I sail a 45' Alan Pape ketch called Jambo. Have been browsing the forum for a long time, have just joined to ask lots of questions and seek advice from the wise. We're planning on packing up to go cruising end of 2009, we're either going to take Jambo via the carribean to the med or buy a boat in the med as this is where we want start (we have lots of friends here and perhaps more importantly my BOSS has decided this is where she wants to cruise 1st !!!!! and who am I to think differently).

Anyway I wondered if anyone might know or point me to where I can find out about whats required when cruising here (med) in terms of customs, duration of stay in a country etc bearing in mind we are SA citizens. We are planning to start from Gibralta and work round. We want to spend the med spring and early summer sailing (will stay longer if we can find quieter cuising grounds/anchorages)and then go home for SA summer and xmas again.

Any advice greatfully received

Welcome aboard - good to have you here amongst this friendly, helpful crew. You live in a wonderful part of the world - Langebaan.

For a start, may I suggest you have a good look at the Cruising Wiki (Med section - Gibraltar, and the section on Greece in particular has a lot of info). If you still have questions then fire away - there will always be someone here to assist you.

Make yourself at home - the Windhoek lagers are on "Nausikaa" today.

Glad to offer a few Windhoeks but, imho, the best NAM beer is not made in Windhoek but in Swakopmund. Hansa is less well known but beats Windhoek hands down - but it is just a quetion of taste and I prefer Castle to either Windhoek or Hansa. Best is Bosun's Bitter or even Ferryman's Ale; beers made by Mitchell's, the micro-brewery, available at the Firemans, Foresters (Forries) and the Ferryman's, all in Cape Town.

I will try and give you a bit of information, although the advice on beer is propbably the best information I can offer.

When coming to Europe, SA citizens need visas for all EU countries with the exception of the UK and Ireland. You can stay in the EU for up to 3 months without further ado but if you wish to remain longer then you must get a temporary residence permit. You are not allowed to take up employment without a work permit.

Gibraltar is not in the EU so the colony's own immigration rules apply there.

The simplest way of doing things would be to get a multi-entry Schengen visa which covers all EU countries. You should apply for this from the country of first entry into the Schengen Area which, in your case, I suspect will be Spain. This you must have prior to entry. You should apply for it in your own country. I should think that Spain will have a consulate in Cape Town. Pop in next time you are in the Mother City and find out if you can apply for a visa there or if you need to do so at the embassy in Pretoria.

I hope this goes at least some way to answering your questions.

Aye // Stephen

Sean welcome to CruiserLog. I do not think I can be of any help on EU formalities as I am an EU citizen but I have sailed a bit in the Med and if I can be of any help please do contact me.

In the mean time, as Lighthouse has pointed out, the Cruising Wike is a good place to look for info.
