Explore our world in comfort and safety

How do you possibly begin to describe the 19 fantastic years of adventure and exploration we have shared with our beautiful 15m
twin keel, world cruiser Wal Rus.
Designed by renowned New Zealand Naval Architect,
Erwin Haag (Haag Boats) and built in Whangerei, NZ, by shipwright Charles Bruni, Wal Rus was designed as a world explorer and with over 120,000nm under her keel ... she has certainly proven her worth.
After her launch, in 1990, Wal Rus sailed north from New Zealand to Alaska and through the inland waterways of British Columbia before continuing down the west coast of America to San Diego, where we discovered her.
No slouches to world cruising, Jim and I had already sailed a light displacement 49’ ketch from Perth, Western Australia, across the Tasman to New Zealand, North through the Pacific, to Hawaii and then San Francisco. From there we went on to explore Hawaii again, Canada, down to Panama and then back up to San Francisco. I guess you could say all those sea miles gave us some extremely valuable understanding and appreciation of what was really required in an ocean going world cruiser.

Wanting to travel further afield, but also recognizing that we needed a more solid cruiser that could navigate both coastal shallows safely as well as the deepest and tumultuous oceans of the world, we began our search for a very special vessel that was both roomy and solid, but also made good passage time in all conditions, from light airs to gales. We wanted a quality vessel that was professionally designed and built, had a proven passage record and could be sailed easily with just two people. Having experienced some big seas in the Southern Ocean,
we knew a modern ‘plastic fantastic’ production boat would not do – we needed a true world cruiser.
We discovered her in Wal Rus and have never looked back.
Over the last 19 years Wal Rus has taken us safely down the West Coast of North and Central America to Panama, eastward through the Caribbean Sea, eastward across the Atlantic Ocean, into the Mediterranean Sea and back out to the Canaries. Then back for a four year circumnavigation of the Med, down the Red Sea into the Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean (east to Thailand then west back to Africa and back to SE Asia), Andaman Islands (twice), South China Sea (several voyages), Sulu Sea, and finally to where she now floats, awaiting her next adventure, in
Sutera Harbour Marina Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.

Life is full of surprises and this last year has seen us outfitting and updating Wal Rus with new gear and equipment, including a brand new fully battened main and furling head sail in preparation for her next adventure, which was going to include lots of Indonesia, the South Pacific, and the East, North and West Coast of Australia.
Sadly, that adventure will be without us as, unfortunately, the human frame is not as soundly constructed as Wal Rus. Age has taken some toll. We now find ourselves considering to take life a little easier, moving ashore, while our pride and joy takes a new crew out to discover the many wonders of our fabulous nautical world.
Will that crew be you?
Welcome to our amazing world cruiser Wal Rus...
Nynke & Jim
