Hi All , I need some help to choose and purchase a proper hose for the shaft log to the stuffing box .

When I was in San Francisco (1996) I had Alameda Prop and Machine, replace my prop shaft, and they used a special purpose hose between the stuffing box and shaft log.

They explained that wire reinforced exhaust hose was inappropriate to use because it wasn't designed to resist the twisting torque from the prop shaft and stuffing box.

My boat's hose is now 14 years old as well as the 4 AWAB 316 SS hose clamps, and I am located in Singapore.

The hose is starting to swell in the middle and on the ends, and the clamps have started to show rust.

Does anyone have an idea of how to specify a replacement hose , that I could take to the local "Gates" hose distributer ?

Hi Douglas,

Here is a web site with pictures of the hose (also called Packing box hose) Buck Algonquin copy on to a thumb drive or print out a picture to take along.

You will need to measure very carefully the O/D of the existing and subtract the wall thickness x 2 to get the important I/D measurement.
