From noonsite:
"The violent anti-American rallies that roiled the Islamic world over a video denigrating the Prophet Muhammad
expanded to Tunisia in September 2012, with demonstrators storming the American Embassy in Tunis. Cruisers report that the general situation in Tunis currently is relatively calm although local unrest and even riots may occur. Tourists should avoid larger crowds and areas in the S/SE (Libya - Algeria border areas) are to be avoided unless accompanied by a local guide. If a US citizen, it is perhaps advisable to not openly advertise this following the recent troubles.
Generally, Tunisians are polite and helpful to all and since tourism is one of the biggest industries, they have grown accustomed to foreigners of all nationalities.
Last updated October 2012."
