Help needed - Papeete

Hi Guys,

Del from Chiara Stella just contacted me via SatPhone to say that his stern tube is cracked and leaking and he needs a haulout to have it repaired due to poor installation when the new shaft seal was fitted. I sailed with him from Newcastle (Aus) to Lyttleton (NZ) in December, he's currently SE of the Chatham Islands and heading for Papeete.

If anyone can recommend a repair facility, please get back to me asap. I already sent him details of Tahiti Nautic Centre in Taravao (found on Noonsite) but alternatives might be useful. Likely places would be Moorea, Raiatea or Bora Bora since they are likely to have yards to service the charter boats there.

Chiara Stella is a 40' steel cutter.

Rarotonga may be cheaper than Papeete. It seems they may have a 40ton travel lift. Have a look at the following. Please note, I have no personal experience of boatyards in the South Pacific. Rarotonga — Noonsite

Thanks Auzee, I've passed that along to Del and he was pleased to have an English-speaking alternative.

Del decided to go with the Rarotonga option, since he has crew departing and leaving there anyhow, and it's fairly easy to get parts shipped in from Auckland. Capt Keith from SV Southern Cross will be attending to the repairs.
