Greetings!

After five months in French Polynesia we arrived in Pago Pago just in time to learn how to Tsurf a Tsunami with a 17 ton yacht - exciting stuff!

I simply want to let you readers and fellow sailors know that we find life here VERY nice and for the life of me, cannot understand why so many people and cruising guides speak so negatively about this port.

The local people are happy, welcoming and as nice as can be. The island is beautiful with nice beaches & cool waterfalls. Costs are reasonable. Health Care is practically free, Internet is cheap. Food is delicious. US Postal Service delivers boat gear quickly from The States. It's easy to get around on public transport. Roads are all paved, well lit and have bike lanes & sidewalks. There are great parks. We have a giant Cost-U-Less store for great provisioning. We have flights to Honolulu & Sydney. It's a two min walk from the dock to town. The harbor is considered to be the safest hurricane hole in the tropical south Pacific and it's nowhere near as dirty as I'd been lead to believe. What's not to like?

And this place is RIPE with opportunities.

So, we're gonna stay here a while, do some upgrades on the boat, get a job, put our son in school and see what we can make happen. If things go right - we may stay a few years. If things go wrong - we'll be poised to get a jump on sailing the fine cruising destinations of Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu and points west, north or south when Cyclone Season ends next April. It's a "Win - Win Situation"... no matter how we choose to look at it.

American Samoa is a fine destination and a welcome change from the pain in the wallet we suffered in French Polynesia - 1200 nautical miles east of here.

To Life!

Kirk

Hey Kirk!, Gee, I guess it is not the dirty, Spam cuisine destination that Paul Theroux had me believe . Well, it might take me a while to get there.....I have to visit my rellies and good friends in Queensland and New South Wales first! Of course, they wish me to sail there.............

Peace, love and positive vibrations,

Heidi
