I am retired Navy (21 years) with more than 1/2 of that at sea in destroyers. After retiring I stood for my Chief Mate License (all gross tons and all oceans) and passed it on the second time around (celestial killed me the first time). Now after teaching in the public school system for more than 13 years (Naval Junior ROTC), I am ready to go back to sea and stay in that environment. I am looking for a boat and the chance to get my sea legs before I make the huge life-change. My present home is now Edenton, NC, USA on the Albemarle Sound. I have many, many questions to ask about how I go about this "project" and what I look for. I really don't want to re-invent the wheel. Most of you sailors have the knowledge of the wheel if I can pick your brains. Thanks. Greetings to you all.

A hearty "welcome aboard".

I'm sure that there is much that you can contribute in the discussions here and our friendly international crew will certainly help you when they can on any questions you may have on cruising. Just ask away on the various topic boards.

Make yourself at home.

I suggest you acquire a copy of The Gentleman's Guilde to the Thornless Path. The opening pages of the book have a good descrition of the cruising life. I am also a Navy retiree and I can assure you that it is nothing like being Haze Gray and Underway.

A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF A CRUISER

Monday: Water tanks low, but it looks like rain, so Jeanne washed the bird sh&one&t off the sun canopy. Peter pumped up the dinghy, broke the pump. It didn't rain.

Tuesday: Cloudy, so Jeanne washed the bird sh&one&t off the sun canopy in case it rains. Peter fixed the dinghy pump. It didn't rain.

Wednesday: Went ashore to get some bread and hamburgers, started to rain as we rowed back to the boat. Washed the bird sh&one&t off the sun canopy but it stopped raining before we could collect any drinkable water.

Thursday: Didn't rain today, water getting low, not enough water to wash the bird sh&one&t off the canopy.

Friday: Started shooting the birds.

Saturday: We smell like we've been dead for three days, so Peter jerry-jugged water from shore so we could wash. Five trips later, water tanks are full.

Sunday: Rained buckets today.

(from our cruising logs, an entry called "general bits and pieces."

Fair winds,

J
