Hi

Roy and I are in SA, we are really keen on buying either a cat or monohull, have been researching on the net, trying to get info from as many people as we can. I can see there are many seasoned yachties out there, so any tips, information or suggestions would be welcome. We would love to cruise as a family, but the first step is buying the right boat.

Welcome to the Cruiser Log. You might consider doing a search here on the site to find prior forum topics of interest to you. This topic has a link to good info on selecting an offshore yacht:

Also, check out the Living Aboard forums, too.

Do you sail already? Is so, what is your experience level? What have you sailed before? Do all members of your family sail? How old are your children?

If not already sailing, certainly take some lessons and consider chartering to get some experience in a variety of boats. That experience can really help you decide the sort of sailing you want to do and the sort of sailboat you need to do it in.
