A friend just sent me these photos and publicity on the new Alinghi, a catamaran that is 27 meters (89') wide, 24 meters long (79'), 50 meters (164') high. *OMG! *ALINGHI.pdf *If they send photos of the transport by helicopter, I'll post them.

Axial, a comparable-sized trimaran sailed into Marigot Bay, St. Martin in 1989, but it was a bit larger - 95 feet (29 m) wide, 90 feet long. *We visited it shortly after it dropped anchor. *We were amazed at the size of the shrouds - I could barely get my fingers from both hands to touch as they surrounded the shroud! *However, looking at the boat you see thin threads coming off the mast, not huge cables. *She was beautiful when she sailed.

I wonder what Alinghi's rigging looks like up close. *I can't wait to see her sailed.*

*On the 1st August Ruargh Findlay shared photo’s of ALINGHI 5 on Lake Geneva, Switzerland with us.*

*

TODAY, Friday 7th August 2009, Alinghi was lifted by the giant Russian Mil Mi26 helicopter at 9:15 this morning, destination Genoa, Italy, where trails and training continue towards the 33rd America’s Cup.

The mast and boat were flown 270 kilometres down the Rhone Valley and across the Great Saint Bernard Pass into Italy, where the helicopter landed in Genoa just outside the Yacht Club Italiano at 14:30pm
